Ascension Elementary School Vegetable Garden Oasis

idea by Danelle
Ascension Elementary School Vegetable Garden Oasis

The Idea

:

Creating a raised vegetable garden bed, adding brightly painted planters along chain link fences for growing climbing vegetables. Planting fruit trees along the perimeter of the hot, barren playground and parking lot to add shade for kids. Adding rain barrels.

Your Team

300 students, plus teachers & parents. Parents & older kids can build & paint planter boxes. Kids fill it with soil, plants, water. Teachers explain importance of "Green cycle" in classrooms.

The Community

:

School shares the parking lot with Ascension church. Community walks past the garden on Sundays. Some parishioners have kids at the school. We can sell some of the fruit at school fundraisers.

The Need

:

No park within 20 blocks. No shade on playground for kids. Trees would create an oasis. Over 80% kids on food program. Fresh fruit & veggies help kids and teach them about the Earth.

Location

:

Ascension school is where 110 & 105 freeways meet. 500 West 111th Place, Los Angeles, 90044. Yes

Timing

:

Before March, so the kids can watch the plant cycle and because it gets so hot later.

After reviewing all the projects, I feel that this one has the greatest need. Children without parks for 20 blocks need green spaces for inspiration and health. Please join me in voting for this project.

Great Idea. That would really help the inner city students understand the plant cycle and how vegetables are obtained/grown. They have very limited access to gardens, plants, etc. And, they would really enjoy the process.
